To many people, too many people it seems, Memorial Day is the "official kickoff to summer." A reason to party, have a picnic and get drunk. The flags do not line streets for "Picnic Day". I find it sad that although most people know what Memorial Day is , they often don't think twice about its meaning.
I just watched the movie, "Taking Chance" and realized that this happens every day to people in this country and while most of us know this, few really give it alot of thought. I am in awe of the people who have survived such a tragedy. I don't know what I would do, but can say without much doubt, that I would not have a fraction of the poise and dignity that the families of the fallen soldiers and civilians show.
I watched the movie with my 5 year old and had a lengthy discussion on war, casulties, family, and military service.
I am so proud of all of our soldiers past and present, and their families for sacrificing so much for a country that all too often, seems ungrateful. I just hope that they know, we are anything but.
Please, this year, and each one that follows, take a few minutes out of your day and thank all those who serve. Whether you "believe" in these wars or not, the reality is that they are happening and the least we can do is show our appreciation to all the brave men and women who protect us and our loved ones.
